I have a new rule: I’ll refuse to purchase a book from a bookstore that can’t provide a complimentary bookmark. I was in a large chain store tonight to purchase Edith Grossman’s new translation of Don Quixote as a gift for Mary Claffey, my sister-in-law who has been an invaluable house guest this week, and the salesman claimed his store generally had piles of bookmarks. I don’t believe him – I’ve noticed a trend that bookstores don’t provide the bookmarks. Please join me in urging your booksellers to give a little.
