Mark Winegardner has been tapped to continue writing Mario Puzo’s Godfather series. This is big, really big. Mark is a fabulously talented writer. He wrote a nonfiction book about a major league baseball scout, titled Prophet of the Sandlots, that was a thrilling read, and another, the novel The Veracruz Blues about Mexican baseball, that was enlightening and entertaining. I knew Mark at John Carroll University, where he was a professor of English. He’d come into the Carroll News office late at night to use the Macintosh computers to create flyers for the visiting authors he was attracting to campus. He brought some big names to JCU, including Tim O’Brien and John Edgar Wideman. Now his name is just as big. Go, Mark.
