Quaking in yer boots

Oct 25, 2006

In a review of The End in Sunday’s NYTimes Book Review, I came upon the word ‘shivaree.’ In my grandpa’s book, Back Forty, he used a similar word, shivery. Great word, means this, according to my two-volume The New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary (which I don’t use near enough, and which Anna will someday awaken to):

Causing a shivering feeling, esp. from cold or fear.

Anna fell asleep while reading the dictionary.
