This morning, as I was drinking a glass of orange juice in the kitchen and scanning the headlines of the NYTimes, I watched little Malia walk out of the bedroom she shares with Anna. Not seeing me, Malia stopped there on the hardwood floor in the yellow living room in her green striped pajamas, and she looked angelic.
Last night was just her second sleeping on a bed—we’ve taken down the crib and set the bunk beds side by side—and I felt lucky and proud to have witnessed this transition. I’ll cherish my memory of this moment, and I hope beyond hope that I’ll be fortunate enough to witness—nay, be observant of—the day-to-day growth of my darling daughters.
Isn’t parenthood sweet.
