The wee hours of the night again, and I’m still working at my computer. I just finished writing a feature story for my Medical Journalism class, a story I pumped out after spending three hours observing action of the Emergency Department at UNC Hospitals. I shadowed the head clerk, an amazing man named Thomas Watson. He’s been at the ED for 35 years, and his jovial personality seemed to reflect years of good experiences in the hospital. Tonight’s patients included a young man who’d been thrown from his car as it rolled over multiple times. He wasn’t wearing a seat belt, and he came in (on the helicopter) pretty banged up and in quite a lot of pain. Another man came in dead, hit by a car. And this was a slow night, to hear the nurses and doctors tell it.
