On NPR today, an interview with singer Bethany Yarrow, daughter of Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul & Mary. Bethany & Rufus will make an appearance with Peter in Western North Carolina in March. I’ll most likely not be able to drive that far for their concert (though sometime later this year, Erin and I and the girls will be driving to Ashe County to spend a week in a cabin, purchased by Erin at a law school silent auction).
A decade ago, I came much closer to Peter Yarrow. Erin and I were in the balcony of Cleveland’s beautifully refurbished Palace Theatre for Peter, Paul & Mary. While Paul had the stage to himself, Peter materialized in the balcony, admiring the ornate gilding on the ceiling above us. When he returned to the stage, he commended Cleveland on saving the theatres.
I’d seen Peter, Paul & Mary twice before. The first time, my dad took us to see the group in Indiana. The second time, I drove from DeKalb to Cleveland to meet up with college friend Mike Sacco for the concert at Blossom Music Center. As I crossed the Indiana-Ohio border, I realized I’d left my ticket at home in Illinois. I bought another anyway.
